In the past week the anniversary 25th conservation holiday at Pomorie Lake was held. More than 20 volunteers from Bulgaria, France, Ukraine and Russia joined forces for conservation of the protected areas complex. As part of the program the volunteers had the chance to learn about different activities of Green Balkans NGO including a presentation about BSB142 BioLearn project that unites partners from 5 countries (Turkey, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Georgia and Greece). Main goal of the project is addressing the problem of litter pollution in valuable wetlands of the Black Sea Basin through environmental education. The focus of the lecture was on the developed report “Litter pollution of Pomorie Lake. Current situation and distribution”. Coordinator has presented the persistent problem with litter pollution of the saline lagoon with waste of any kind and results from performed mapping of distribution and quantity of litter by types.
On the next day the volunteers had the chance to encounter the problem on the ground during their work on the large islet that is part of dike 1. This zone was one of the litter pollution hotspots described during the mapping. The volunteers contributed to problem’s solution and each one has collected a bag full of litter from the banks of the internal dike separating the lagoon in two.
Project BSB142 BioLearn is funded by Joint Operational Programme Black Sea Basin 2014-2020 co-financed by the European Union through the European Neighbourhood Instrument and by the participating countries: Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine.
