The Campaign “Clean Waters – Clean Black Sea”

The Campaign “Clean Waters – Clean Black Sea” which is part of an international initiative taking place in Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Ukraine and Georgia was held on 19th June. The rainy weather did not stop us and we managed to gather in Pomorie and Burgas to make these beautiful places cleaner.

In Pomorie the sandy strip separating Pomorie Lake from the Black Sea was cleaned, as the region is part of Pomorie Lake Protected Area, two NATURA 2000 sites – Pomorie Protected Site and Pomorie Lake Protected Site. It is also a Ramsar site – Pomorsky Wetlands Complex .

In Burgas volunteers, including young children, pupils and students collected waste from the beach that separates the Black Sea from Atanasovsko Lake, which is a CORINE site, Maintained Reserve, and the buffer zone is a “protected area Burgas salt pans”. Since 2008 Atanasovsko Lake is part of the European Natura 2000 network.

The main goal of the campaign was to raise awareness of our society about the increasing problem of pollution of wetlands and the Black Sea.

The campaign is organized in connection with the implementation of the project “Environmental awareness and behavior to stop pollution in significant wetlands of the Black Sea Basin”, BSB142 BioLearn, funded by the Operational Program for Cross-Border Cooperation under the European Neighborhood Instrument “Black Sea Basin 2014-2020”, performed by NGO “Green Balkans – Stara Zagora.
