Clean-up of the Pomorie Lake sand spit

In the past weekend large scale clean-up of the sand spit separating Pomorie Lake from the Black Sea was made. The area is part of Pomorie Lake protected site, two NATURA 2000 sites – Pomorie SCI and Pomoriysko ezero SPA, and Ramsar site Pomorie Wetland Complex. With a length of 6 km this strip is one of the longest beaches along our Black Sea coast while at the same time it preserves some of the most representative sand dunes with the typical specific vegetation. The initiative was organized by project “Beach guide” whose aim is to create guide for beaches including 1200 sites along Bulgarian Black Sea coast and was in partnership with “Citizens for Pomorie” association, Pomorie Munisipality and group for civil sympathy “AZZA”.

Green Balkans representative participated in the initiative and delivered a lecture about the specific dune vegetation of the site. The participants had the opportunity to learn which are protected plant species and which plant is the symbol of Pomorie Lake – Trachomitum venetum whose largest location in our country is exactly at the site. Provisional results from the performed mapping of litter distribution and quantities at Pomorie Lake within BSB142 BioLEARN project were shortly presented and the plans for meeting with stakeholders for discussion of developed report.

The clean-up complements the already traditional campaigns organized in past two years by “Citizens for Pomorie” association for cleaning of saline lagoon banks and clearly shows the position of the civil organizations on the problem with wetlands’ pollution with litter.
